Don’t Doubt Your Credibility! Find it with the Help of This Short Exercise!
On more than one occasion I’ve heard, “I can’t be a consultant (contractor, independent worker, freelancer or fill in the blank). I don’t know why anyone would hire me! I have nothing to offer.”
Over the last few months, I’ve watched people start doubting themselves. It is easy to get down. The list goes on.
Don’t doubt yourself. Don’t let doubt hold you back from attempting what you want to do. I have yet to find a person that doesn’t have credibility in something. To help you think about your credibility factor, here is a short exercise.
Start by saying, I’m awesome! Grab a piece of paper and pen or pencil, and get ready to think differently. If you work best in a quiet space, find it. If you work best with music blasting, blast the music. Find a spot where you can open up your mind and let your juices flow.
Now, list all the reasons why someone might find you useful. No matter how ridiculous the reason, joint it down. Use your imagination, remembering that you are AWESOME! Consider your formal and informal education, awards, and anything else you’ve achieved both professionally and personally because these can all be reasons. Be specific with tangible and intangible reasons.
When I say consider everything, let me provide an example of what I mean. You’re a tax accountant by day but your passionate about a nonprofit so you volunteer to lead their fundraising effort. The effort exceeds expectations, people note your leadership, and another nonprofit’s CEO asks if you can meet. You led an AWESOME fundraising campaign!
Ask for help. If you’re like me there are times you can’t see the forest from the trees. Don’t be surprised if the people come up with points you never considered. Don’t be surprised if one of the points you never considered becomes a top credibility factor highlighting your AWESOMENESS.
BRAG. You are AWESOME! You have done great things and it is time to let people know. “It ain’t braggin’ if you’ve done it.” But here is the catch. Be humble when bragging because there is a fine line between being obnoxious and real. Being real is being personable because not only do you need to be creditable, you need to be approachable, likeable, and authentic.
You now have reasons why you are creditable and awesome. Use the reasons to put doubt behind you and do whatever you want in life.
If you don’t think you’re AWESOME, why would anyone else?
